You have to identify pretty strongly with suffering artistes to find anything to root for in The Science of Sleep.

This florid fantasia pivots on a Mexican-bred graphic artist named Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal) who goes to Paris after his father's death to stay with his mother (Miou-Miou) only to end up in a dead-end job and a not-quite-romance with a gal named Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg).

The Science of Sleep (Warner Independent) Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg. Directed by Michel Gondry. Rated R. Time 106 minutes.
