The Kickoff

September 28, 2006|By GLENN GRAHAM

PLAY OF THE WEEK

Peyton Manning, Indianapolis at N.Y. Jets -- A tough Jacksonville defense limited Manning to 219 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Look for his numbers to go way up Sunday against the Jets, who rank 27th in the league in passing defense.

POSITION ANALYSIS

QUARTERBACK

STARTING NOD -- Carson Palmer, Cincinnati vs. New England. Look for Palmer to build on last week's 193-yard, four-touchdown game at Pittsburgh.

OTHER SOLID OPTIONS -- Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia vs. Green Bay; Marc Bulger, St. Louis vs. Detroit; Jake Delhomme, Carolina vs. New Orleans.

TAKE A SEAT -- Philip Rivers, San Diego at Ravens; Kurt Warner, Arizona at Atlanta; Mark Brunell, Washington vs. Jacksonville.

RUNNING BACK

STARTING NOD -- Brian Westbrook, Philadelphia vs. Green Bay. Westbrook has been one of the most productive backs with 420 total yards and a league-high five touchdowns.

OTHER SOLID OPTIONS -- Ronnie Brown, Miami at Houston; Warrick Dunn, Atlanta vs. Arizona; Larry Johnson, Kansas City vs. San Francisco.

TAKE A SEAT -- Ahman Green, Green Bay at Philadelphia; Corey Dillon, New England at Cincinnati; Thomas Jones, Chicago vs. Seattle.

WIDE RECEIVER

STARTING NOD -- Torry Holt, St. Louis vs. Detroit. The veteran wide receiver will put on a familiar show for his former coach, Mike Martz, now the offensive coordinator for the Lions.

OTHER SOLID OPTIONS -- Steve Smith, Carolina vs. New Orleans; Braylon Edwards, Cleveland at Oakland; Marvin Harrison, Indianapolis at Jets.

TAKE A SEAT -- Deion Branch, Seattle at Chicago; Joe Horn, New Orleans at Carolina; Reggie Williams, Jacksonville at Washington.

TIGHT END

STARTING NOD -- Jason Witten, Dallas at Tennessee. Going up against two solid defenses in the first two weeks, Witten combined for seven catches and 78 yards. Coming off a bye and playing a Titans defense that ranks 21st against the pass, he should have a breakout game.

OTHER SOLID OPTIONS -- Randy McMichael, Miami at Houston; Kellen Winslow, Cleveland at Oakland; Antonio Gates, San Diego at Ravens.

TAKE A SEAT -- Chris Cooley, Washington vs. Jacksonville; Ben Troupe, Tennessee vs. Dallas; Jermaine Wiggins, Minnesota at Buffalo.

KICKER

STARTING NOD -- Jeff Wilkins, St. Louis vs. Detroit. For the season, Wilkins has converted 11 of 13 field goals and is 2-for-2 on extra points.

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

STARTING NOD -- Philadelphia vs. Green Bay. Should the Eagles get off to another fast start, it could spell trouble for quarterback Brett Favre and the Packers' offense Monday night.

Last week's tab

Play of the week -- Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia: 18-for-33, 296 yards, two TD passes.

Quarterback -- Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle: 24-for-33, 227 yards, five TD passes, three interceptions.

Running back -- Edgerrin James, Arizona: 94 yards, one TD.

Wide receiver -- Antonio Bryant, San Francisco: four catches, 36 yards.

Tight end -- Alge Crumpler, Atlanta: five catches, 47 yards.

Kicker -- Adam Vinatieri, Indianapolis: DNP.

Defense -- Ravens: one fumble, one interception, seven sacks.glenn.graham@baltsun.com
