Girl, 16, fatally shot, gunman takes own life in Colo. school

BAILEY, Colo. -- A gunman holding students hostage at a high school in the small mountain community of Bailey, Colo., fatally shot a teenage girl, then killed himself as SWAT members burst into the second-floor classroom where he was holed up, said Park County Sheriff Fred Wegener.

The student, identified by a friend of the family as Emily Keyes, 16, was taken hostage by the gunman at Platte Canyon High School just before noon yesterday.

Bev Lilly, a spokeswoman for St. Anthony Hospital Central in Denver, confirmed that the student died at 4:32 p.m., shortly after arriving by helicopter. Lilly said the girl had been shot in the head.

The gunman had not been identified, and a reason for the takeover wasn't known.

Lynn Bigham, a friend of the student, described the girl as "sweet and affectionate."

Initially, six students were taken hostage in the classroom, but four were released, There were reports of multiple gunshots being fired early in the standoff, which ended about 3:45 p.m.
