White House hopefuls get jump on campaign

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Under the radar of the midterm elections, potential contenders for the White House in 2008 - nearly two dozen strong - are waging vigorous, and in some cases imaginative, campaigns across the country this fall.

Their maneuverings run the gamut, from raising money and enthusiasm for 2006 candidates to quietly generating cash, buzz and talent for themselves. As soon as the Nov. 7 election is over, the presidential contest will break into the open.
