Yankees update

The Yankees clinched their ninth consecutive American League East title almost two weeks ago but are still fighting the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. They are 10-6 against the Orioles this season. Shortstop Derek Jeter is a strong Most Valuable Player candidate and will be chasing Minnesota's Joe Mauer for the AL batting title this week. Left fielder Hideki Matsui has batted .410 since returning this month from a broken wrist. Right fielder Bobby Abreu has hit .342 since the Yankees traded for him in late August. With a win Friday, tomorrow's starter, Chien-Ming Wang, tied for the major league lead with 18 victories. Closer Mariano Rivera returned from a strained forearm with a save against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Friday. Manager Joe Torre has said he would like to use Rivera in consecutive games this week to test his readiness for the playoffs.
