A 25-year-old man died early yesterday near Annapolis after the car he was driving spun off the road, hit a utility pole, a wooden fence and two trees.

Anne Arundel County police said that Daniel Leigh Thompson of the 200 block of Westwood Road in Annapolis was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said. A passenger, Joshua Paul Shumway, 26, of the 8000 block of Pendragon Way in Pasadena, was treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The accident happened about 1 a.m. when the 2007 Mercedes S-550 Thompson was driving veered off the road at a curve on Ridgely Avenue near Kirkley Road. Police said the car stopped about 260 feet from where it left the road. Police said they believe that excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
