She announced last week that McDaniel College in Westminster plans to use a $150,000 grant to establish a Center for the Study of Aging that school officials say will help develop geriatric expertise for Carroll and neighboring counties, where the elderly population is projected to see huge increases by 2020.

Career highlights

Coley is the first of the college's eight presidents to rise from the school's faculty ranks. She was the college's provost for six years and has served as dean of faculty, chairwoman of the education department, dean of graduate affairs and director of the graduate reading program.

Personal

A longtime Westminster resident, Coley, 61, moved off campus last month after marrying McDaniel alumnus Lee Rice. A Philadelphia native, Coley is the mother of a married son, David, and grandmother to Johanna, 4. She received an A.B. with honors from Albright College and master's and doctorate degrees in education from the University of Maryland.

Philosophy
