Roundtable seeks volunteers

The Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT) needs volunteers for its Achievement Counts Speakers Bureau.

MBRT will hold training sessions for Carroll County speakers at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Carroll County Department of Economic Development.

The speakers bureau is part of MBRT's Achievement Counts campaign designed to teach students about the rigorous coursework they will need to take in high school in order to improve their chances for success after graduation.

Volunteers are asked to make four 45-minute classroom presentations during the fall semester. They choose the school, dates and times that are convenient for them.

Volunteers receive a lesson plan and three hours of training.

School board to meet Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold an administrative meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices at 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

A work session will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday on interventions.

Meetings will be broadcast live on CETV, Channel 21 on Adelphia cable TV, and repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the following Thursday, and 9 a.m. Saturday.

CCC offers courses on specialty writing

Carroll Community College will offer specialty writing courses this fall.

Children's Writer's Discussion Group: Children's author Lois Szymanski will offer writers of children's stories a chance to read their work aloud in a group setting. Participants will learn common mistakes made by new writers and how to catch problems in plotting, characterization, descriptions, beginnings and endings, and improve critiquing skills. The cost is $80. Classes are from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays Oct. 2 to Nov. 20 at the Westminster library branch.

Poetry Workshop: Awakening Your Muse. Kevin Thornton will lead students in reading and discussing poems that "work," reviewing major poetic forms and tools, and writing and sharing original poems. Students will keep a poetry journal and share original works in class. The cost is $71; seniors, $25. Classes are from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mondays Oct. 9 to Nov. 13 at the 1601 Washington Road campus.

Journal Writing. Jody Nusholtz will encourage students to explore their creativity and develop self-understanding through journaling techniques and discussion. The cost is $35. The workshop is from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 28 on campus.
