Atholton High to host college fair

Atholton High School will be the host for the annual Howard County College Fair, to be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at the school, 6520 Freetown Road, Columbia.

About 150 colleges will be represented. Parents and students will have an opportunity to speak with college representatives and participate in workshops on the college application process.

Howard County middle and high school students and their parents are encouraged to attend.

"Colleges That Change Lives: Forty Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student," will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 18 at River Hill High School.

The program is presented by the school's guidance office. Admission is free. Information: 410-313-7400.

Audit committee to meet Wednesday

The Audit Committee of the Board of Education will hold its quarterly meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Room B37 at the Applications and Research Laboratory, 10920 Route 108, Ellicott City.

School board to meet Oct. 3

The Howard County Board of Education will meet at 4 p.m. Oct. 3 in Room B-37 of the Applications and Research Laboratory Building, 10920 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The afternoon session, and an evening session that begins at 7:30 p.m., will start with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Sign-up in advance is preferred.

During the evening session, the board will hold a public hearing on revisions to Policy 11400, Parent/Community Involvement. Those who want to speak are asked to limit the presentation to three minutes and provide 15 written copies of their testimony at the hearing. The board will also hold a work session and approve the fiscal 2008 capital budget and fiscal 2009-2013 capital improvement program.

A meeting of the Board of Education with PTA presidents and members of the Citizens Advisory Committee to the Board, previously scheduled for Sept. 14, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Susquehanna Room at Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Faun Court, Columbia.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for discussion in an informal setting.

Operation SMART to start Oct. 7

The Columbia Teen Center will present Operation SMART (Science, Math and Relevant Technology), an opportunity for girls ages 11 to 15 to have fun with science and experiment with mathematics.

The program will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 7, 21, 28 and Nov. 4. Space is limited. The cost is $60 for Columbia residents; $72 for nonresidents.

Registration open for PSAT, SAT class

Registration is open for a PSAT and SAT course at Oakland Mills high School. The class, which is open to all high school students will be held from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 1 and 8.

The cost is $185 and includes tuition and materials. A portion of the fee benefits the school.
