Anti-drug session planned for youngsters Oct. 3

The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, will present "Beyond Safe: Preventing Drug Abuse," a workshop for youngsters ages 11 to 15 and their parents, led by a facilitators from the Howard County Health Department.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the Horizon Foundation, will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3. Topics will include talking with children about drugs, preventing abuse before it begins, adverse health effects, risk factors and legal consequences for the abuser. A free dinner is included.

Library's teen panel to meet Oct. 3

The Miller branch library's Teen Advisory Board will meet to socialize and share ideas about library programs and new books from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Oct. 3.

The board, for ages 13 and older, meets the first Tuesday of each month. Everyone is welcome. Registration is requested.

"Pins and Needles" is an opportunity for needlecrafters to meet, work on stitching, knitting or crocheting projects and share ideas and tips.

The group will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 and 18. Registration is required.

Bird club plans outing Wednesday

The Howard County Bird Club will meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday to look for bird species along the wooded trails and fields of David Force Park in Ellicott City.

Beginners are welcome. There is no cost. The group will meet at the sign on Pebble Beach Drive, north of U.S. 40.

Drawing, painting -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor drawing and painting classes for those ages 55 and older from 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow through Nov. 27 and 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. tomorrow through Nov. 27 at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center in Ellicott City. All you can eat -- The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary will hold all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 1. 410-313-4901. Participants are needed for the Fire Department's annual parade to thank the community for its support; the parade is to be held Oct. 7. PSAT, SAT prep -- The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor its second session of preparatory courses for the October PSAT and SAT tests, taught by Marian McCain, a former mathematics teacher at Centennial High School. Classes, which will be held Wednesdays in Room 121 at Mount Hebron High School, are scheduled for Oct. 2, 9 and 16.
