All week, Eastern Tech midfielder Mike Sokolis received phone calls from his friends on No. 13 Perry Hall's soccer team about how the Gators were going to win yesterday's game.

However, it was Sokolis who had the last laugh, scoring two goals to help lead the visiting Mavericks to a 3-2 upset. Sokolis also was a force on defense and helped stop a late attack by Perry Hall with several key slide tackles and defensive headers.

"We have a lot of friends on [Perry Hall], which helps create a big rivalry," Sokolis said. "We were up for this game, and we were ready for it all week. When we had the lead, we just tried to settle back to come out with the win."

Eastern Tech opened the scoring with 19:54 left in the first half when Sokolis took a pass from Ray Zacharski inside the penalty area, cut the ball inside and then fired a low shot past Perry Hall goalie Zach Kane (two saves). However, the Gators pulled even with less than a minute left in the half when Tommy Quaranta headed in a long throw-in from Peter Schonk.

The Gators continued to attack the Mavericks by moving the ball through the middle of the field. Mavericks goalie Ricky Willis came off his line several times to punch away long passes into the box and finished with nine saves.

Eastern Tech (4-1) took the lead with 28 minutes left in the game when David Cash slotted a free kick from 25 yards out to Sokolis, who found the net with a low shot to the far post. Tevin Jackson added an insurance goal with five minutes left off a deft cross from Cash.

The Gators (4-1) pulled within a goal with just under 10 minutes left on an unassisted goal by Scott Wolf.
