Correction

An article in the early edition of Sunday's Sun described Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele as attempting to become the first black Republican senator since Reconstruction. If elected, Steele would be the first black Republican senator since Edward W. Brooke III of Massachusetts left office in 1979.

The Sun regrets the error.
