Watercolor classes slated to start Nov. 8

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor watercolor classes with Carol Zika, for those ages 55 and older, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Nov. 8, at Glenwood Community Center.

The class is designed for beginners, but continuing students and experienced dabblers are welcome. A supply list will be discussed at the first class.

Registration is due as soon as possible. The cost is $33 for a six-week session.

An "Artful Journaling" program for senior citizens, also taught by Zika, will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, beginning Nov. 8. Participants will have a chance to create a journal using notations, artwork and memorabilia, collage, weaving, stitching and transparencies.

The cost is $33 for the six-week class, with an additional fee for materials.

Baseball tryouts to start Oct. 8

Western Howard County Travel Baseball will hold spring tryouts for ages 8-and- younger through 13-and-younger travel teams Oct. 8 at Western Regional Park.

The tryouts will be run by professional scouts or instructors, who will evaluate fielding, running, hitting, throwing and pitching skills and document the results on a scouting report, which can be purchased.

Pilates introduction set for Sept. 25

The Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, will offer a miniworkout session with Susan Kain of Triumph Health and Fitness Center, "Introduction to Pilates," at 7 p.m. Slept. 25.

Participants should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat or towel. Registration is required.

Dance -- Project C Dance Collective opened in Waverly Woods, Marriottsville, on Aug. 14. The studio, led by artistic director Jen Graham, offers beginning-, intermediate- and advanced-level dance, acting and fitness classes to children ages 3 and older and adults. 410-442-4409.

La Leche to meet -- La Leche League of Western Howard County, a chapter of the nonprofit organization that offers information and peer support to breastfeeding mothers, will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at the Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville. The topic will be "The Art of Breastfeeding and Avoiding Difficulties." "Nutrition and Weaning" will be discussed Nov. 8. The new chapter is seeking mothers who live in western Howard and are seeking or can offer guidance and support to other breastfeeding mothers. Pregnant mothers and babies are welcome. 5K race -- Marriott's Ridge High School's second Boosters' "Mustang Stampede," a 5K race and one-mile fun run, will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 15, rain or shine. Packets for the fundraiser can be picked up from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 at the school, or from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. on race day.
