Helminiak is likely chairman

GOP Central Committee appears to have lost 2 members in primary

Two members of Carroll County's Republican Central Committee apparently were ousted in Tuesday's primary, while the seven other members were re-elected. However, absentee and provisional ballots still have to be counted, which could sway the results.

Member Larry Helminiak, who narrowly lost to South Carroll Del. Susan W. Krebs in the District 9B primary race, received the most votes, which would make him the new chairman of the nine-member committee.

The lowest vote-getters, Betsy Combass of New Windsor and Koreen Hughes of Sykesville, may have lost their seats. Newcomers Michael R. Guerin of Mount Airy and Roberta J. Windham of Eldersburg apparently earned spots on the committee.

Windham said she and Guerin might have political differences with the other members.

The central committee shouldn't have subtly endorsed some Republican candidates in the primary, she said.

"I would like to keep the central committee on the path of promoting the Republican Party, promoting Republican candidates in Carroll County - all of them," Windham said.

Up to two women and two men from five districts can earn seats on the county's Democratic Central Committee. Only 14 members were elected Tuesday.

Six more could be appointed and a male-female balance must be maintained, said Martin A. Radinsky, the committee chairman. The committee will elect officers Thursday. Current leaders can remain in place until after the general election, said Radinsky, who won another term in South Carroll's District 4.
