Tigers update

The Tigers' once-comfortable lead in the American League Central hasl been nearly erased by the Minnesota Twins, who won last night and trail Detroit by only one game. Detroit, which led its division by 10 games on Aug. 8, is 28-30 since the All-Star break and 7-14 in its past 21 games. The Tigers have been carried by their pitching staff, which has a league-leading 3.75 ERA and has given up a league-low 589 runs. The Orioles, however, won't have to face right-hander Justin Verlander, the favorite for AL Rookie of the Year, or left-hander Kenny Rogers, who is 15-6 with a 3.86 ERA. Bonderman, tonight's starter, is winless in his past nine outings. The Tigers have three players - Marcus Thames, Craig Monroe and Brandon Inge - with 20 or more home runs.
