Underage drinking is focus of summit

The Howard County Health Department will sponsor a free interactive Underage College Drinking Prevention Summit on Wednesday at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

The event, which begins at 3 p.m., will focus on helping next year's college freshmen avoid such risks as alcohol poisoning, sexual assault, driving drunk, suspension and academic failure.

Lonise Bias, whose son, University of Maryland basketball player Len Bias, died in 1986 of cocaine intoxication, will speak. Administrators and athletic department staff members from Maryland colleges are expected to attend.

The event is open to 12th-graders and their parents. Registration for students and parents will be held from 11 a.m. to noon, when lunch will be served. Registration, which is required, will continue until 3 p.m., when the keynote address is expected to begin.

Mall schedules lung-heath exhibit

The Breathing Room, an interactive educational exhibit on lung health, will be available at the Lord & Taylor court at The Mall in Columbia from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7.

The exhibit includes a video program on lung health, live demonstrations of lung capacity measurement tests, physicians onsite to answer questions, and a giant three-dimensional display of the differences between healthy and diseased lungs.

The exhibition is sponsored by the COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) Foundation and other organizations and companies.

Classes, services

Consultations -- Comfort Care Medical Equipment of Towson will be at Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center, 5900 Cedar Lane, Suite 2, Columbia, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to noon tomorrow. The company will offer professional consultations and fittings of postmastectomy products for women who have had breast surgery. Appointments are not necessary. The Mayer center, a project of Howard County General Hospital, provides educational resources for cancer patients and their families and aesthetic services for cancer patients. Yoga -- The Yoga Center of Columbia, 8950 Route 108, will offer a certificate training course for parents, teachers and therapists in yoga for children. Level I will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, and 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. tomorrow. Level II will be offered from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. No experience with yoga is necessary. The course, called "Radiant Child Yoga Teacher Training," will focus on helping children increase strength, flexibility, coordination, concentration and body awareness, as well as awareness of thoughts and feelings; sleep problems, such as insomnia, and nighttime fears also may be addressed. Professionals who work with autistic children and children with learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are invited to participate. 410-720-4340.

Aquatic fitness -- Aquatic fitness classes are offered by the Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $5 a class. 410-312-9000.

Losing weight -- Individualized weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered by Howard County General Hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hospital. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740-7601.

Healing arts -- The Columbia Center for the Healing Arts, 10450 Shaker Drive, Suite 110, Columbia, will offer a free introductory workshop, "Create a Life That Matters," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 27 and from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 7. The workshop, which will be led by Kathryn Yarborough, owner of the center and an alternative practitioner and movement therapist, will include discussion, journaling and guided imagery. 410-428-6660.

Baby-sitting -- Howard County General Hospital will offer an "Essentials in Babysitting" class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7 at the hospital's Wellness Center, Suite L-9 of Columbia Medical Center, 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway. The cost is $46. 410-740-7601.
