Morgantown, W.Va. -- Steve Slaton suspects he has the turtles, though where they are right now is anyone's guess. Stuffed in a box maybe, gathering dust in an attic or a basement, forgotten long, long ago.

The plastic figurines - which depicted Maryland's mascot, Testudo, in all his menacing glory - were a present from his mom in 2003, during his junior year at Conwell-Egan Catholic High School in Fairless Hills, Pa. At the time, they were supposed to be a fun, inexpensive way to celebrate his recent good news. Slaton, considered one of the best high school running backs in Eastern Pennsylvania, was going to be a Terp. He had called Maryland's coaching staff, which had been recruiting him for some time, and given it his word.
