J. Carroll upsets St. Joe in soccer

Mike Grathisar scored in the first overtime period to give John Carroll a 4-3 upset victory over No. 2 Mount St. Joseph in boys soccer yesterday.

Patrick McAvoy found Grathisar at the top of the 18-yard box and he deposited the ball past Gaels goalkeeper Nick Smith to lift the visiting Patriots (2-1).

McAvoy and Grathisar each had a goal and an assist in the win.

Tyrone Hall had a goal and an assist for the Gaels (2-2-1), who fell to then-No. 3 Loyola on Monday.

Field hockey

No. 4 Bryn Mawr 1, St. Mary's 0 -- The Mawrtians held off the visiting Saints (1-2) behind junior Sarah Cole's first-half score. Abigail Bisbee preserved the shutout for the Mawrtians (3-0) with five saves.

St. Paul's 1, No. 12 Severn 0 -- Senior captain Ashley Holofcener scored the lone goal for the visiting Gators (2-1) as they edged the host Admirals. Kelly Mudeking stopped seven shots to earn the shutout.

Girls soccer

No. 3 John Carroll 4, Mount de Sales 1 -- Junior Grace Gaeng scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Patriots (4-1) past the host Sailors.
