Melissa Chen, a senior midfielder and captain, is in her third season starting for the Lightning. Last season, she earned second-team All-County honors after scoring six goals and adding six assists. Chen, a B student, enjoys working with children and may become a teacher. University of Maryland, Baltimore County is her first choice for college.

What do you remember about the first time you picked up a field hockey stick?

My mom actually played field hockey in high school. It was in the fourth grade and the old field hockey coach [Kelly] Snyder came to my elementary school for a field day, and I just remember her coming over to me and showing me how to stand and hold the stick. It was fun.

What's it like this year being the senior captain and what are some of the responsibilities that come with that?

I love it. I've been looking forward to this year since I was a freshman. It's great to have the respect of the other players and to be able to help everyone. You really know they're listening to you and taking your advice.

How tough is it scoring a goal in field hockey and what's the feeling like when you do score?

It can be pretty tough. Once you work your way down the field, you have to keep going. It's a great feeling. Your team is cheering you on, you hear the fans cheering for you and it's like you really deserve it.

What are you looking forward to the most about your senior year?

I'm looking forward to graduating, turning 18 and filling out this college form to get ready for the next part of my life.

What is it about working with kids you enjoy so much?

I've been around kids my whole life. My mom is a second-grade teacher, and I would help her out sometimes. I work in infant care at the Young School - changing diapers, feeding babies and stuff like that. It's good because they can't talk back, and it's always somebody's birthday and it's just like a family there.

What else do you enjoy doing when you're not playing field hockey?

I hang out with my boyfriend a lot. We like to do goofy stuff like going to the driving range or bowling.

Are you a big sports fan?

Yeah, I like the Dallas Cowboys. I think [Terrell Owens] and Drew Bledsoe will work real well together.

Thinking back, what is your most memorable moment at Long Reach?

Probably my first day of school when I walked in with my brother and there was this whole new part of my life starting. Being able to walk in there with the team, I knew a lot of the girls already so that was good.
