Red Sox update

The struggling Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals on Sunday to avoid an embar-rassing three-game sweep at Fenway Park. Boston is 23-34 since the All-Star break and trails the New York Yankees by 10 1/2 games in the American League East. Since leading the division on July 31, the Red Sox, beset by injuries to several stars, have lost 11 games in the standings. Boston's team batting average since Aug. 1 is .241. The Red Sox have scored only 54 runs in their past 20 games. David Ortiz remains a candidate for the American League Most Valuable Player award with 48 home runs and 127 RBIs. Wakefield will be making his first start since July 17 after being on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his rib cage. The Orioles are 1-11 against the Red Sox this season.
