Just when I thought the Yankees got all the breaks, Johnny Damon was called out at second base to end the fifth inning yesterday after breaking too soon. Replays seemed to indicate that Damon beat Kevin Millar's throw, but umpire Ed Hickox didn't think so.

"I wasn't thrilled because I was safe," Damon said afterward. "I just wish that the umpire would get into better position. I think he was just ready to ring me up and get the inning over. But I thought I was clearly safe."
