Wine festival to offer tastings and vendors

The 23rd Maryland Wine Festival 2006 will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Carroll County Farm Museum, 500 S. Center St., Westminster.

Admission is $20 for those ages 21 and older with valid identification; $5 for ages 7 to 20; and free for those ages 6 and younger with a paying adult. The adult admission includes a 2006 logo-engraved wine glass, up to 20 samples of Maryland wines and wine-education seminars.

Fourteen Maryland wineries will participate with their finest vintages. The American Wine Society will present educational seminars on using the sensory wine rating scale, and wine and health.

Demonstrations on making wine, from picking fresh grapes to crushing, pressing and fermenting, will be held.

Also on the grounds will be 60 juried craft vendors and more than 20 food vendors.

On Saturday, the American Lung Association of Maryland will hold its Wine Festival Bike Tour fundraiser.

Performing on stage Saturday will be: 11 a.m., Blues Works; noon, Rita Clarke & the Naturals, rhythm and blues; 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., JUNKYARD Saints, Mardi Gras; 3 p.m., Gail Marten & the Clem Ehoff Trio, jazz; 4 p.m., Mike Dugan & Blues Mission; 5 p.m., Bourbon Street Ramblers, Dixieland jazz.

Next Sunday's performers are: noon, Tom Principato Band, jazz; 1 p.m. to 2:45, Big Cam & the Lifters, oldies rock `n' roll; 3 p.m., Eric Byrd Trio, jazz; 4 p.m., Mike Dugan & Blues Mission; 5 p.m., Bourbon Street Ramblers.

Motorists should watch for new traffic patterns to the festival. Shuttle parking is available at Carroll Community College, Route 32 off Route 97, and the County Office Building at 225 N. Center St. Additional museum parking is available at the Agriculture Center off Smith Avenue.

The wine festival is in need of volunteers both days. After completing their assigned shift, volunteers receive a free pass to the festival. To volunteer: 410-386-3882.
