Firefighters to mark Sept. 11 with bell ceremony

September 10, 2006

The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department will remember all those who died Sept. 11, 2001, particularly the 343 New York firefighters, with a bell ringing ceremony tomorrow morning in front of the station on Route 32.

Company members will come to attention as a ceremonial bell is rung at 10:05 a.m., when the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed, and again at 10:28 a.m., the time that the north tower collapsed.

"The bell will be sounded in the tradition of the FDNY's line-of-duty-death alarm in four sets of five rings," said Bill Rehkopf, Sykesville's public information officer.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony.
