Presentation to feature historic school

The Patapsco Female Institute will sponsor a presentation by M. Lee Preston Jr. on the historic women's school at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Ida, the institute's visitor center and museum.

"The Patapsco Female Institute: The School, the Staff, the Students, and the 19th-Century Values Found Therein" will include material from letters, personal accounts, annual reports and artifacts found at the site. The lecture is to begin at 8 p.m. Hands-on activities are also planned.

The cost is $10. Reservations are required.

"Digging in the Ruins" at Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park, a program for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders to participate in an archaeology dig at the park, is planned from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Participants will have a chance to experience digging and sifting, and mapping artifacts. Take a lunch; snacks and drinks will be provided.

The cost is $30 for parent and child. Reservations are required.

"Victorian Dreams," a chance for girls in fourth, fifth and sixth grades to dress in pinafores, make a craft from the 1850s and play games and sports of the period, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. The cost is $10 a person. Reservations are required.

Fire Department plans basket bingo

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary will hold a basket bingo at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The cost is $15 in advance, $18 at the door, and includes 20 games and door prizes. The kitchen will be open.

Participants are needed for the Fire Department's annual parade to thank the community for its support; the parade is to be held Oct. 7.

Patriot's Day -- The Yingling-Ridgely Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary No. 7472 of Ellicott City will be hosts for the fifth anniversary Patriot's Day 9/11 program, sponsored by District 9 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary, Department of Maryland. The event will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow at 4225 VFW Lane, Ellicott City. Drawing, painting -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor drawing and painting classes for those ages 55 and older from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 through Nov. 27 and 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Sept. 25 through Nov. 27 at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center in Ellicott City. PSAT, SAT prep -- The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor its second session of preparatory courses for the October PSAT and SAT tests, taught by Marian McCain, a former mathematics teacher at Centennial High School. Classes, which will be Wednesdays in Room 121 at Mount Hebron High School, are scheduled Oct. 2, 9 and 16.
