Final Lake Elkhorn Festival is Saturday

The Owen Brown Community Association will hold its 33rd and final Lake Elkhorn Festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Lake Elkhorn Park.

The Columbia Concert Band will play at 11 a.m. Singer Iris Hirsch will perform at 12:15 p.m. and Dean Turner will present a magic show at 1 p.m. The Kinderman is scheduled for 2 p.m.; a pet show (all animals welcome) for 3 p.m.; and Eyes of Alice, a teen band, will play at 4 p.m.

Bingo, games for children, a pet show, pony rides, an auction, arts and crafts, raffles, international food and drinks, a bake contest, big wheel races, a German band, vendors and other treats are planned.

Spiritual meaning of love set as topic

Rabbi Joshua Martin Siegel, rabbi emeritus of the Columbia Jewish Congregation, will offer a class on the spiritual meaning of love in all relationships at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 10689 Owen Brown Road.

The four-session class, based on Siegel's book, A Short Book About Love -- An Interactive Guide, is open to everyone; couples are especially invited.

The cost is $25 a person; $40 a couple, and includes a copy of the book.

Free yoga class is being offered

The Kings Contrivance Community Association will offer a free Hatha yoga class from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday. A nine-week session for beginners is to start Sept. 20. A continuing class is also offered. The cost is $96-$130. The cost to drop in is $16 a class.

Ballet and tap classes for children ages 3 to 6 will be offered Mondays. The classes will be taught by Sandra Duerr.

Judy Milke will lead parent-and-child classes, for parents and children ages 14 months to 4 years. Classes are offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, depending on the age of the child.

"Pilates on the Ball" for beginners and intermediates is offered on a continuing basis from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Mondays. The cost for eight weeks is $96-$108.

Belly dancing -- Long Reach Community Association is offering belly-dancing classes for adults through Oct. 2. Classes for beginners meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays; advanced students meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.

Bridge, mah-jongg -- A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. A 30-minute lecture is included. Players at all levels are welcome to refresh skills, learn bridge conventions and meet friends. Mentoring is available. The cost is $6. Lessons in mah-jongg are offered at the 50+ Center. Farmers' market -- A temporary farmers' market has been opened at Kings Contrivance Village Center to offer produce, flowers and baked goods. The Safeway store that anchored the village center has been closed. The farmers' market is at the village center from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

Clothes-toys swap -- Long Reach Community Association's Kids' Clothes Swap, a chance to buy and sell gently used children's clothes, toys and furniture, will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the parking lot of Long Reach Village Center. The rain date is Sept. 30. Spaces for sellers are $15. 410-730-8113.`Stepping Out' -- The Long Reach Community Association, 8775 Cloudleap Court, will offer a six-week series of classes on social skills and self-confidence for children and youth, ages 8 to 13. Called "Stepping Out," the program is designed to teach self-confidence, positive styles, attitudes and behaviors and appropriate manners.
