No. 2 Spalding girls shut out Broadneck

Ali Jones scored early in the first half and the Archbishop Spalding defense held off Broadneck as the No. 2 Cavaliers (2-0) beat the No. 15 Bruins, 3-0, yesterday in the opening round of the Anne Arundel Community College Tournament.

Captains Julie Gates and Jennah Yunger led the Spalding defense, which held the Bruins (0-1) to five shots on goal.

Broadneck goalkeeper Melissa Orega made 10 stops.

Boys soccer

No. 1 Calvert Hall 4, Spalding 0 -- The Cardinals rolled in their conference opener behind a pair of goals from sophomore Matt Tyrie.

No. 2 Mount St. Joseph 5, St. Paul's 1 -- Uche Okoha had two goals to lead the host Gaels. Mount St. Joseph (2-0-1) faces No. 3 Loyola on Monday.

Field hockey

No. 12 Spalding 5, Good Counsel 1 -- Junior Abby Lynch scored two goals for the host Cavaliers (2-0), who built an early lead and rolled past the visiting Falcons.
