Healing-arts center plans a free session

The Columbia Center for the Healing Arts, 10450 Shaker Drive, Suite 110, Columbia, will offer a free introductory workshop, "Create a Life That Matters," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 27 and from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 7.

The workshop, which will be led by Kathryn Yarborough, owner of the center and an alternative practitioner and movement therapist, will include discussion, journaling and guided imagery.

Hospice fundraiser brings in $6,245

A fundraiser for Hospice of Howard County, held Aug. 25 at the new Ellicott City Let's Eat! -- a meal-assembly business -- generated $6,245.

Participants created one meal (four to six servings) or two, with proceeds going to Hospice of Howard County.

More than 130 people participated in the event, which included a raffle for a painting donated by Gallery 44.

Classes, services

Baby-sitting -- Howard County General Hospital will offer an "Essentials in Babysitting" class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow and Oct. 7 at the hospital's Wellness Center, Suite L-9 of Columbia Medical Center, 11055 Little Patuxent Parkway. The cost is $46. Lunch will be provided. 410-740-7601.

Aquatic fitness -- Aquatic fitness classes are offered by the Central Maryland Rehabilitation Center at the Howard Community College pool. Sessions are held Monday and Friday afternoons. The cost is $5 a class. 410-312-9000.

Consultations -- Comfort Care Medical Equipment of Towson will be at Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center, 5900 Cedar Lane, Suite 2, Columbia, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Thursday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Friday; and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The company will offer professional consultations and fittings of post-mastectomy products for women who have had breast surgery. Appointments are not necessary. The Mayer center, a project of Howard County General Hospital, provides educational resources for cancer patients and their families and aesthetic services for cancer patients. Losing weight -- Individualized weight-loss counseling with a registered dietitian is offered by Howard County General Hospital between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the hospital. Appointments, which cost $25 for a half-hour visit, must be scheduled in advance. 410-740- 7601.

Alzheimer's talk -- Erika Atkins of the Maryland chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will talk about coping with the disease's symptoms and progression at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. She will answer questions and suggest resources. Registration is required. 410-313- 7860.

Yoga -- The Yoga Center of Columbia, 8950 Route 108, will offer a certificate training course for parents, teachers and therapists in yoga for children Sept. 15-17. No experience with yoga is necessary. The course, called "Radiant Child Yoga Teacher Training," will focus on helping children to increase strength, flexibility, coordination, concentration and body awareness, as well as awareness of thoughts and feelings; sleep problems such as insomnia and nighttime fears may also be addressed. Support

Terminally ill -- Howard County General Hospital has started a Compassionate Companion Program to help terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers, who receive extensive training, stay with the patient when members of the family are not able to be present. Volunteers must commit to a specified on-call time and come in to be at a work station each week. Barbra Swann, 410-884-4580.

Caregiver support -- Winter Growth, a private nonprofit organization that offers assisted living, medical adult day care and a wellness program for senior citizens, offers a free caregiver support group for anyone in the community from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month. NAMI -- NAMI Howard County is offering three free support groups.

A group for family and friends of adults with mental illness meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the day room at Harmony Hall Retirement Community, 6336 Cedar Lane, Columbia. The next meeting will be held Tuesday.

A peer-based CARE group for people living with mental illness who work, go to school or regularly interact with the community meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month at Wilde Lake Interfaith Center, 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia. The next meeting will be held Sept. 26.
