Chinese drums at Strathmore

Making its American debut with this tour, China's Shanxi Jiangzhou Drum Art Ensemble stops at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda on May 3, performing as Jigu! Thunder Drums of China.

Featuring 28 drummers, percussionists and musicians engaging both the eye and the ear, the ensemble has earned worldwide acclaim. The group's repertoire is firmly rooted in the rich culture of the Shanxi province, a region in western China reputed to be the birthplace of the drum and gong. Expect ensemble musicians to play a wide range of instruments - from brass gongs to barrel drums covered in cowhide or pigskin - in an assortment of styles, from celebratory to mournful and every gradation in between.

The Shanxi Jiangzhou Drum Art Ensemble will perform as Jigu! Thunder Drums of China at 8 p.m. May 3 at the Music Center at Strathmore, 10701 Rockville Pike. Tickets: $21 to $40. Information: strathmore.org or 301-581-5100.
