Russell, Toni

September 06, 2006

This is in honor of Tony Russell B.S.N., R.N. of Abingdon, MD who died Saturday. She was a loving wife of fifty years to Jack; devoted mother of Jackie, Merri and Raymond; ever present grandmother of Brandon, Meghan and Hilary; ecstatic great-grandmother of Emily; and grateful friend of Lois. Toni was born in Bronx, NY, where she graduated from Mt. St. Ursula Academy. While raising three children, she graduated from Essex Community College in Nursing, where she was distinguished with the John Newpher Award for Maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. She went on to achieve a BSN from SUNY. She began her stellar nursing career at Johns Hopkins ICU, followed by over 25 years of service at City Hospital/Bayview where she achieved the position of Head Nurse in the Emergency Department. She left Bayview holding the position of Trauma Services Coordinator, where she discovered her aptitude and love for teaching, and is still held in high regard. She went on to become the Director of Medical Services at Patient First Greenspring, where she further honed her leadership skills. Toni spent much of her free time engaging in service work helping her family, friends, patients and community. She had a particular gift for mentoring families struggling with the disease of addiction. Her love of animals was evident through her regular volunteering with animal rescue organizations and shelters. She modeled to everyone she came in contact with the certainty that living unselfishly is not only a gift to others, but to oneself. Her death was sudden and she will be truly missed by many. Services will be held on Wednesday, September 6, from 2-5pm and 7-9pm at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. MacPhail Road, Bel Air, MD 21014. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Toni's name to Father Martin's Ashley, 800 Tydings Lane, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
