River Hill upsets Towson in volleyball

The River Hill volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 victory over the visitors from sixth-ranked Towson.

The Hawks (1-0) started by dominating the opening game 25-6, but the Generals (0-1) tied the match at one by winning the second game 25-13.

Seventh-ranked River Hill took the next two games, 25-10 and 25-17, to complete the upset.

River Hill pulled off the upset despite missing starting setter Becky Paynter, who was out of the lineup after a recent car accident.

South Carroll 3, Urbana 1 -- The visiting Cavaliers (1-0) opened with a 25-14, 25-20, 10-25, 25-20 win for first-year coach Marcia Kunkel. South Carroll was helped by Sam Scura (eight kills), Erin Popa (15 assists) and Mary Harshman (five aces).

Boys soccer

No. 2 Mount St. Joseph 1, Gilman 1 -- Senior defender Donald Gibson tied the game for the Gaels with 10 minutes remaining after the host Greyhounds (0-0-1) led at the half. Mount St. Joseph keeper Nick Smith had four saves to keep the Gaels within reach.
