What better time than in the heat of summer to think about fall. At many destinations, prices drop after Labor Day and, as Travelzoo.com notes, many airlines have reduced fares. Here are some autumnal offers:

Uncommon Journeys is offering free train travel to Chicago as part of its 10-day Fall Colors on the Mississippi River package. In Chicago, there is a two-night stay at the Drake Hotel and a welcome dinner. Next, guests travel to St. Louis aboard the Steamboat Express, a classic 1940s train, with complimentary meals and drinks aboard. There is sightseeing in St. Louis before embarking the Mississippi Queen for a steamboat cruise to St. Paul, Minn. The journey ends with an overnight stay at the St. Paul Hotel. There is only one departure, Oct. 24. Prices start at $2,395. Call 800-323-5893 or visit un commonjourneys.com.

The Sagamore, a resort on Lake George in New York's Adirondack Mountains, has put together a Land, Air and Lake Getaway that includes two nights' stay and a lake cruise on the resort's 72-foot yacht or a sightseeing train ride on the Upper Hudson River Railroad. Prices start at $245 per person. Call 800- 358-3585 or visit thesagamore.com.

The price of air fares and accommodations are often lower in fall. For example, a recent Virgin-Atlantic offer for a three-night London Fling began at $499 for Nov. 1 departures. Visit ba.com and virgin-atlantic.com.

TourCrafters is offering its seven-night Amalfi Delight package in Italy for $1,695 per person this month, $1,295 and up next month, and $995 in November. This Amalfi Coast package includes round-trip airfare to Naples, accommodations at the Hotel Villa Romana in Minori, daily breakfast and dinner, eight days' car rental and hotel service charges and taxes. Visit tourcrafters.com or call 800-482-5995.

RiverBarge Excursions is offering guests $100 in Barge Bucks and an onboard credit for alcohol and gift shop purchases on two excursions this fall, including a November trip on the barge River Explorer, which travels along the Ohio and Cumberland rivers from Louisville, Ky., to Nashville, Tenn. The price is $1,340- $1,490, including a return to Louisville by motorcoach. Visit riverbarge.com.

For those seeking a new destination, there is Slovenia the Beautiful, an eight-day tour from the sea to the Alps, Sept. 18-25 and Oct. 9-16. The motorcoach tour goes to Ljubljana, Portoroz, the Postojna Caves and Bled. The price is $1,098, including accommodations, round-trip fare from New York and a buffet breakfast and dinner daily.
