`Stepping Out' to teach kids self-confidence, manners

The Long Reach Community Association, 8775 Cloudleap Court, will offer a six-week series of classes on social skills and self-confidence for children and youth, ages 8 to 13.

Called "Stepping Out," the program is designed to teach self-confidence, positive styles, attitudes and behaviors and appropriate manners. Students will be encouraged to feel good about themselves and be comfortable in social settings.

Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Sept. 16 through Oct. 21. The cost is $150, with a 5 percent discount for students in Columbia Association-assessed property.

Clothes-toys swap set for Sept. 16

The Long Reach Community Association's Kids' Clothes Swap, a chance to buy and sell gently used children's clothes, toys and furniture, will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 16 on the parking lot of Long Reach Village Center.

The rain date is Sept. 30. Spaces for sellers are $15.

Temporary farmers' market opens

A temporary farmers' market has been opened at Kings Contrivance Village Center to offer produce, flowers and baked goods. The Safeway store that anchored the village center has been closed.

The farmers' market is at the village center from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

Around Town

Country fair -- The 27th Long Reach Country Fair, sponsored by the Long Reach Community Association, will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the village center. Music, homemade food (including funnel cakes), old-fashioned crafts, games, a children's area and other treats are planned. Admission, parking and entertainment are free. 410-730-8113.

Belly dancing -- Long Reach Community Association is offering belly-dancing classes for adults through Oct. 2. Classes for beginners meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays; advanced students meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.

Bridge, mah-jongg -- A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. A 30-minute lecture is included. Players at all levels are welcome to refresh skills, learn bridge conventions and meet friends. Mentoring is available. The cost is $6. Lessons in mah-jongg are offered at the 50+ Center. Summer sundae -- The Kings Contrivance Community Association will sponsor an "End of Summer Sundae Making" event from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Amherst House, 7251 Eden Brook Drive. All-you-can-eat ice cream sundaes will be available for $2 a person, but tickets must be purchased in advance. A free Hatha Yoga class will be offered from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. 410-381-9600.
