VFW hosts a program for Patriot's Day 9/11

The Yingling-Ridgely Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary of Ellicott City will be hosts for the fifth Anniversary Patriot's Day 9/11 program, sponsored by District 9 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary, Department of Maryland.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at 4225 VFW Lane, Ellicott City. A lasagna dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit veterans and their families, and help pay for youth scholarships.

Junior Firefighters sponsoring dance

The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a Back-to-School Youth Dance, for ages 9 to 15, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. Tickets, available only at the door, are $7.

Gardening -- The Howard County Master Gardeners inaugurate their fall and winter public educational program with a discussion at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Library, 9421 Frederick Road. Granddaughter to speak -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor a talk by Susan V. Lawrence, granddaughter of Michael Lindsay, a teacher at Yenching University in China. Lindsay fled the city of Yenching during World War II, barely escaping the occupying Japanese forces, and worked as a technical adviser to the Chinese Communist army under Mao Tse-tung. His granddaughter, a journalist who is writing a book about her grandfather, will recount some of his adventures at 7 p.m. Thursday. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.

Wire jewelry -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a class in wire jewelry-making for beginners, ages 55 and older, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Ellicott City Senior Center. Participants will learn to make two pairs of earrings and practice techniques for making unusual wire and beaded projects. The cost is $22, including the use of equipment. For girls -- The Elkridge library is offering Girls Group, a chance for girls ages 12 to 15 to meet and talk about favorite books, movies and music and make crafts. The group meets from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on alternate Fridays. Registration: is requested. 410-313-5088.

Relax -- The Stressless Tests program will present a new four-part study-skills course for middle school pupils from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 9 at Burleigh Manor Middle School. A second session runs from Oct. 16 through Nov. 13. High school classes will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 13, 20, 27 and Oct. 4 at Centennial High School. A second session runs from Oct. 11 through Nov. 1. The cost is $165 per course. Classes are limited to 15 students. The courses are taught by Betty Caldwell, adjunct faculty member at Howard Community College, who has a private counseling practice specializing in stress management. 410-740-4659.

Drawing, painting -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor drawing and painting classes for those ages 55 and older from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 through Nov. 27 and 1:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Sept. 25 through Nov. 27 at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center in Ellicott City. PSAT, SAT prep -- The Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor its second session of preparatory courses for the October PSAT and SAT tests, taught by Marian McCain, a former mathematics teacher at Centennial High School. Classes, which will be held Wednesdays in Room 121 at Mount Hebron High School, are scheduled Oct. 2, 9 and 16. Sessions are offered from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The cost is $395. 410-461-9057.

Decorator show house -- Ellicott City Inc. will present its 22nd decorator show house, the Lawn at Lawyers Hill in Elkridge. The 19th-century home, once a summer country retreat, was the first house built in the historic district of Lawyers Hill. A preview party will be held Sept. 14. Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are $75. The house will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 16 to Oct. 15. The last admission is one hour before closing. Tickets are $12 in advance; $15 at the door.
