John T. Kerr, 89, construction engineer

John T. Kerr, the retired president of two engineering businesses, died of congestive heart failure Aug. 25 at the Blakehurst Retirement Community in Towson. The former Ruxton resident was 89.

Born and raised in York, Pa., he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Princeton University in 1939.

After marrying Dora Preston in 1940, they moved to Baltimore and he joined Consolidated Engineering Co. He managed commercial construction projects, including the old Commercial Credit Building and Friendship Airport, now Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. He was named the company's president in 1971.

Mr. Kerr and several of his colleagues founded Concord Associates in 1973, and he was its president for a decade until retiring in 1983.

"He had a belief that it was important to contribute to the construction industry in any way that he could," said his son, John T. Kerr Jr. of Monkton.

Mr. Kerr had been president of the Society of American Military Engineers, the Maryland Chapter of Associated General Contractors and the Building Congress & Exchange of Metropolitan Baltimore.

In retirement, he assisted new business people through the Service Corps of Retired Executives and worked with a Greater Homewood Community Association remedial reading program. He also worked alongside family members in the nonprofit Rebuilding Together Baltimore.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 8 at Second Presbyterian Church, 4200 St. Paul St., where Mr. Kerr was a 65-year- member and had been a trustee, elder and deacon.

Survivors also include two other sons, William M. Kerr of Baltimore and Charles Kerr of York; a daughter, Lucille Kerr-Grimaldi of Rome; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His wife of 64 years died in 2003.
