Hearing postponed in Columbia killing

A bail review hearing for the Columbia 15-year-old charged in the shooting death of an 18-year-old Columbia man over the weekend was postponed yesterday morning because the youth did not have an attorney.

Monti Mantrice Fleming of Owen Brown village, is accused of fatally shooting Shawn Edward Powell during a fight Saturday at a Columbia apartment complex. Police originally gave Powell's first name as "Shaun," based on motor vehicle records.

Fleming, who is being held at the Howard County Detention Center, is charged as an adult with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and handgun violations. He also faces attempted-murder charges stemming from an Aug. 22 incident in which he is accused of shooting a man in the leg.

A spokesman for the Howard County state's attorney's office said a new bail review hearing for Fleming had not been scheduled.
