County to hold rabies project

The Anne Arundel County Health Department will hold its annual raccoon Oral Rabies Vaccination Project Sept. 6 through 30.

The vaccination-laden bait will be distributed by hand in densely populated residential areas. Bait teams will wear fluorescent orange vests and travel in marked county vehicles. Helicopters and airplanes will be used in less populated areas.

There are two kinds of bait. One resembles a small brown brick, and the other looks like a light brown condiment packet, waxy and similar to a ketchup packet. The raccoon must bite down on the packet to receive the vaccination. The baits are safe to humans and pets

The program is intended to prevent rabies among the county raccoon population.
