Barlett to host town hall meeting

Congressman Roscoe G. Bartlett, a 6th District Republican, will host a town hall meeting with Veterans Affairs Secretary R. James Nicholson at 1 p.m. Sept. 5 at the American Legion, Francis Scott Key Post 11, 1450 Taney Ave., Frederick.

All veterans and their families are invited to attend to get an update about programs and legislation affecting veterans.

Bureau of Aging seeks volunteers

The Carroll County Bureau of Aging's Long Term Care Ombudsman Program is seeking volunteers to monitor nursing homes and assisted living facilities and to uphold the rights of residents in those facilities.

Volunteers will make weekly visits to facilities and tell residents about their rights, investigate complaints and seek to resolve problems. Ombudsmen monitor conditions to ensure regulatory compliance.

Training will be held from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Sept. 12-28 at the Bureau of Aging offices, 125 Stoner Ave., Westminster. Volunteers must attend all classes.

Public safety office to offer workshop

The Carroll County Office of Public Safety Support Services and Carroll County Health Department will hold a workshop for residents with special needs and their caregivers on how to prepare for emergencies from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 13.

The event is geared toward individuals who face challenges, such as evacuating a wheelchair user or obtaining prescription medicine during a blizzard.

Personal support networks and tools for planning will be discussed. Registration is required.
