Sound Check

This Week's Highlights

August 24, 2006

Better Than Ezra -- Rams Head Live / New Orleans' Better Than Ezra burst onto the scene with MTV and radio play with "Good" in 1995. Although the band has since faded from the mainstream, its rigorous touring schedule and loyal fan base has kept it going. The group plays Rams Head Live on Sunday. Rams Head Live is at 20 Market Place. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22 in advance and $25 Sunday. Call 410-244-1131 or visit

Kim Waters -- Rams Head Tavern / Kim Waters, with 13 albums under his belt and 10 No. 1 hits, is one of the top five best-selling instrumentalists in contemporary jazz. The saxophone player is considered a pioneer of the "urban smooth jazz" sound, a combination of primarily R&B and jazz, but also with elements of funk and pop. He plays two shows at the Rams Head Tavern on Sunday. Rams Head Tavern is at 33 West St., Annapolis. The shows are at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $29.50. Call 410-268-4545 or visit

Teena Marie and Mint Condition -- Constitution Hall / R&B singer Teena Marie is a music and business pioneer. She was one of the first artists to rap on her own single, 1981's "Square Biz." She left Motown records after discovering she had been underpaid for her four albums on that label, and later a law was passed, the Brockert Initiative, limiting the length of recording contracts. She plays Constitution Hall on Saturday with R&B band Mint Condition. Constitution Hall is at 18th and D streets Northwest, Washington. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $65.
