Suspect in JonBenet death to appear in L.A. court today

LOS ANGELES -- John Mark Karr lunched on a bologna sandwich, carrots and an apple in the Los Angeles County jail yesterday, a day after he washed down seafood with champagne aboard a flight from Thailand to face charges in the 1996 killing of JonBenet Ramsey.

Karr, who spent the day in the facility that once housed O.J. Simpson, "Nightstalker" Richard Ramirez and actor Robert Blake, is scheduled to appear in court today to announce whether he will oppose extradition to Colorado, where JonBenet was killed. If Karr waives extradition, he could be quickly handed over to Colorado authorities.

Karr has said he was with the 6-year-old when she died in the basement of her Boulder, Colo., home. He said her death was an accident.

Media organizations including the Associated Press asked a judge yesterday to unseal documents involving Karr. The filing noted previous mistakes in the Ramsey investigation and said there is "great public interest" in whether Karr's arrest "is yet another `mistake.'"
