Register by tonight or miss primary

The statewide deadline for registering to vote in Maryland's Sept. 12 primary elections is 9 p.m. today. Voters can register by mail if their paperwork is postmarked by today. Registration forms can be downloaded online at

Voter registration applications are also available at any office of the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Social Services Administration, Motor Vehicle Administration, Offices on Aging, at all public institutions of higher education, and at state or county board of elections offices.

Keiffer Mitchell backs Schaefer

Baltimore City Councilman Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr. delivers a strong endorsement of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer's re-election in a new ad that began running yesterday on Baltimore and Washington-area radio stations.

Mitchell, a grandson of longtime NAACP lobbyist Clarence Mitchell Jr., praises Schaefer in the ad as an official who stood with his family during the civil rights struggle and who appointed the city's first African-American police chief.

Smith set to endorse Hollinger

Baltimore County Executive James T. Smith Jr. is scheduled to endorse state Sen. Paula C. Hollinger's bid for Congress today in Towson. Hollinger, a fellow Baltimore County Democrat, is in the midst of an eight-way battle in the 3rd District.
