Surfing competition

You don't need to hop a plane to Waikiki Beach in Oahu, Hawaii, or Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, to watch some of the world's top surfers ride the waves this summer. Just take the drive south to Virginia Beach, Wednesday through Aug. 27 and catch the 44th annual East Coast Surfing Championship. More than 100 professional surfers from around the globe and about 300 amateurs will compete for more than $35,000 in cash and prizes at the event.

There also will be skateboarding, volleyball, skimboarding and swimsuit competitions, as well as an oceanfront 5K run, extreme sports demonstrations, food concessions and live music from groups such as the Violent Femmes, Tonic and the Pietasters.

All events are free for spectators. Fees and pre-registration required for participants. Call 800-861-SURF or visit
