Man found hanging from south-side bridge

August 18, 2006|By RICHARD IRWIN

A man's body was found last night under a bridge in South Baltimore in an apparent suicide, city police said.

Homicide Detective Fred Daum said a 42-year-old homeless woman who had been sleeping under the northbound span of the bridge in the 3100 block of S. Hanover St. awoke about 8 p.m. and saw the man hanging a few yards away. She fled and notified someone who called police, Daum said.

The man - whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives - apparently tied several strands of heavy string around a pipe under the bridge a few feet from the edge of the Patapsco River while standing on a discarded chair, wrapped the other end of the strings around his neck, and kicked the chair away to hang himself, the detective said.
