Kactus Boys and Sara Beck to perform at coffeehouse

The Kactus Boys, a bluegrass group, and Sara Beck, a former Howard County resident who is a songwriter in Nashville, Tenn., will be at One World Coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way.

The Kactus Boys will perform songs from their newest compact disc, which will be available to purchase.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12; $6 for students. The coffeehouse is sponsored by Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia.

Watercolor classes slated for seniors

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor watercolor classes for seniors, ages 55 and older, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Fridays, starting Sept. 22, at the east Columbia library senior center, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

The class, which will be taught by Carol Zika, is designed for beginners, but continuing students and experienced dabblers are welcome. A supply list will be discussed at the first class.

The cost is $55 for the 10-week class. Registration and payment are due as soon as possible.

Teen pool party set at Kendall Ridge

The Columbia Association's Teen Advisory Committee will sponsor a teen pool party from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at the Kendall Ridge swimming pool.

A disc jockey and food will be provided. Tickets are $3 in advance; $4 at the door. Teens will be required to show Columbia Association membership or resident cards. The pool is at 8245 Tamar Drive.

Model homes -- Oakland Mills Model Homes Project, a partnership of the Oakland Mills Community Association and Howard County Housing Commission, will hold an open house at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The focus of the project, a part of the Oakland Mills Village Revitalization effort, is to highlight housing opportunities for young professionals in the village. With assistance from the Columbia Foundation, one of two homes purchased by the housing commission has been remodeled and will be open to the public. When completed, both homes will be sold on the open market. A second phase of the project will include remodeling a townhouse. 410-730-4610.

Belly dancing -- Long Reach Community Association, 8775 Cloudleap Court, is offering belly-dancing classes for adults through Oct. 2. Classes for beginners meet from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays; for advanced students, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $64 for eight weeks, with a 5 percent discount for residents of Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.

Free ice cream -- Howard County Farmer's Market in Oakland Mills Village Center will hold free ice-cream days Tuesday and Sept. 12. The market, which is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, carries vegetables, fruit, flowers and fresh baked goods. Corn and peaches are available. Bridge, mah-jongg -- A drop-in bridge program is being offered from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesdays at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library. A 30-minute lecture is included. Players at all levels are welcome to refresh skills, learn bridge conventions and meet friends. Mentoring is available. The cost is $6. Lessons in mah-jongg are offered at the 50+ Center.
