Yankees update

The New York Yankees have won eight of nine and moved into first place in the American League East yesterday with an 8-1 trouncing of Toronto and Boston's 7-6 loss to Cleveland. The Yankees are 4-2 against the Orioles this season. They entered yesterday third in the AL in runs scored despite being without Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui for much of the season. The team's newest acquisition, outfielder Bobby Abreu, is 5-for-13 (.385) in his first three games as a Yankee. Shortstop Derek Jeter leads the Yankees with a .354 average that would be a career high if he maintains it. Jason Giambi leads the team in homers with 31 and RBIs with 85. Johnny Damon is hitting .290 with 74 runs scored. Closer Mariano Rivera continues to be impeccable with 26 saves and a 1.92 ERA.
