One killed, two injured in crash on Route 140

One person was killed and two were hospitalized yesterday after a chain-reaction crash on Route 140 northwest of Reisterstown, Baltimore County police said.

The crash occurred about 3 p.m. near Glen Falls Road and the border of Baltimore and Carroll counties, involving a motorcycle, a truck towing construction equipment and a car, police said.

Pronounced dead at the scene was the driver of a 1995 Saturn, Michael Durgala, 23, of Annandale, Va., police said

Two others, including the driver of the motorcycle, were treated at area hospitals. Their identities were withheld pending notification of family members, police said.

Demolition of building begins

Demolition began yesterday on a run-down building in Dundalk as part of an effort to upgrade the gateway to Turners Station and Watersedge, county officials said.

The demolition of the abandoned laundromat building in the 7900 block of Dundalk Ave. will improve access to a small waterfront park scheduled for improvements, officials said. Another neglected building next to the laundromat was razed last winter.

Construction of a nearby traffic roundabout, at the intersection of Dundalk Avenue, Sollers Point Road and Liberty Parkway, is to begin in a few weeks. The project, with new sidewalks, brick paving accents and road resurfacing, was awarded to Machado Construction Co., which submitted the low bid of $963,757, officials said.

Cardin endorses Zirkin for Senate

Del. Bobby A. Zirkin said yesterday that he has received the endorsement of Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin in his campaign for a state Senate seat in Baltimore County.

The endorsement, confirmed by a Cardin spokesman, came a month after Zirkin's opponent in the Democratic primary accused him of promoting an endorsement from Cardin that he had not received.

Zirkin said at the time that he had misinterpreted conversations with Cardin during which the congressman expressed his "support" for Zirkin and two delegates running for re-election. Zirkin is running for the 11th District Senate seat held by Democrat Paula C. Hollinger, who is running for Congress. The district includes Pikesville and other areas of northwest Baltimore County.

In an e-mail, a spokesman for Cardin wrote that the congressman has endorsed Zirkin, Del. Jon S. Cardin, who is his nephew, and Del. Dan K. Morhaim. Jon Cardin and Morhaim are running for re-election in District 11.

"I was proud a month ago to have the official support of Ben Cardin, and now I'm proud to have the official endorsement of Ben Cardin," Zirkin said.

Baltimore man charged in sex assault

A 20-year-old Baltimore man has been arrested and charged in the sexual assault of a woman in her Towson apartment, according to court papers.

Michael Ray Brown Jr. of the 1300 block of Stonewood Road was charged with a first-degree sex offense, first-degree burglary and first-degree assault, court papers show.

The woman awoke about 2:15 am. Tuesday with a man wearing a nylon mask standing over her, records show. After the assault, the man left through the locked front door, court papers show. The woman said the screen to a second-story window was missing. She was treated at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, court papers show.

Brown was arrested about 11 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
