Accountant convicted of embezzling $7,000

A 44-year old accountant who worked from her Columbia home was convicted yesterday of embezzling $7,000 over 16 months from the Virginia-based trade association for which she worked.

Maria Collazo, of the 11000 block of Snowflake Court, admitted the theft in testimony before Circuit Judge Richard S. Bernhardt, according to a spokesman for the state's attorney's office.

Collazo was treasurer for the Fredericksburg-based National Association of Accountants for Cooperatives, a nonprofit group. She was accused by prosecutor Lynn Marshall of stealing $8,900 in about 30 separate checks written to herself between May 28, 2003, and September 26, 2004.

She could face a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of $25,000 at sentencing Nov. 13.
