51st birthday party slated for the Enchanted Forest

Clark's Elioak Farm will celebrate the Enchanted Forest's 51st birthday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 to 13.

The farm has adopted many of the features of the now-defunct amusement park - giant fairy tale figures of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland and recently, the newly renovated Old Woman's Shoe and Three Bears' House.

Farm animals to pet, hayrides and pony rides will be available, as will face-painting by Laura Renee Davis of Nouveau Face Painting, CJ's Country Catering pit beef and vintage Enchanted Forest photos.

The farm is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

School-readiness workshop planned

The Howard County Office of Children's Services will offer a workshop for parents and professionals, "Am I Ready for School? Meet MMSR," an overview of the Maryland Model for School Readiness, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in suite 380, 3300 N. Ridge Road, Ellicott City.

"Watch What You Say!" - a workshop on the pitfalls of praise in shaping children's behavior, will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"After-School Programs: Making Literacy Fun," a presentation on helping children ages 5 to 14 learn, will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

The cost for each workshop is $20.

Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English Conversation Club, for people who speak English as a second or third language, from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

School registration -- Hollifield Station Elementary School is accepting registration from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Kindergartners must have been born between Oct. 1, 2000, and Sept. 1, 2001. Parents must be residents of Howard County and live in the Hollifield Station school district. A picture identification, current lease or deed, current utility bill, pupil's birth certificate and proof of immunization (unless a religious exemption is claimed) are required at registration. Chess club -- Elkridge Young Adult Chess Club for ages 11 to 17 will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd. No experience is necessary, and players of all skill levels are welcome. Snacks will be provided. 410-313-5077.

Anger management -- The Family Tree, a nonprofit organization, will present an anger-management workshop for adults from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd. Participants will have an opportunity to discover their anger style and learn alternative ways to express their feelings. For girls -- The Elkridge library is offering Girls Group, a chance for girls ages 12 to 15 to meet and talk about favorite books, movies and music, and try a craft. Meet `Holmes' -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, will offer children ages 8 to 10 a chance to "Meet Sherlock Holmes," who will share his adventures and reveal secrets about his toughest cases, at 4 p.m. Saturday. Members of the of the local Sherlock Holmes society, Watson's Tin Box, will impersonate Holmes.

"Kindergarten, Here We Come!" - a program of stories and activities to help children entering kindergarten make the transition - will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Aug. 8 and 7 p.m. Aug. 10. Registration is requested. 410-313-5085.
