THUMBS UP

Steve McNair's best pass came when he floated a throw over a linebacker and into the hands of tight end Todd Heap.

Defensive back Jamaine Winborne, who is fighting for a roster spot, made an interception.

THUMBS DOWN

The new Brian Billick is apparently a short-winded one. The head coach gave no expansive answers after practice in one of his shortest news conferences ever, ending it after 2 1/2 minutes. Asked about the absence of first-round pick Haloti Ngata, who later in the day agreed to terms, the usual verbose Billick referred all questions to general manager Ozzie Newsome.

Punter Leo Araguz, who is battling rookie Sam Koch for a job, dropped one snap and then shanked a kick.

QUOTABLE

"I think every guy from last year's team has a chip on his shoulder. We have to prove that last year was a fluke."

Receiver Derrick Mason on the team's mentality for this season INJURIES

As precautionary measures, running back Jamal Lewis (hip) and receiver Clarence Moore (hernia) were placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Both could practice Monday, the first day of contact drills.

ABSENCES

Offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, whose father died Wednesday, is expected to miss next week's practices.
