White Sox update

The reigning world champions are reeling from a three-game sweep by Minnesota that left them a half game back of the New York Yankees in the American League wild-card standings and in a second-place tie with the Twins in the AL Central. Chicago has lost five straight series and has won just twice in its past 12 games. The White Sox are 8 1/2 back from first-place Detroit. Chicago's problems have stemmed from inconsistent starting pitching. The team has an ERA of 4.57, only the ninth best in the AL. Vazquez's lone win in his past six starts came against the Orioles, who took the first game in a four-game July series in Chicago behind Bedard but lost the final three. Jim Thome has 33 homers and is one short of tying Robin Ventura's franchise record for the most in a season by a left-hander.
