Anne S. Cain, 47, registered nurse, outdoor enthusiast

Anne S. Cain, a registered nurse and outdoor enthusiast, died of colon cancer Saturday at her Columbia home. She was 47.

The former Anne Skelley was born in Hartford, Conn., and raised in Fairfax, Va., where she graduated from high school. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Virginia in 1981, and her nursing degree in 1986 from Texas Woman's University College of Nursing in Houston.

Mrs. Cain began her nursing career at Humana Hospital in Houston, and for the past 17 years had been a labor and delivery nurse at Howard County General Hospital. She was diagnosed with colon cancer six years ago.

She was an avid flower gardener, swimmer and hiker.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Roman Catholic Church of the Resurrection, 3175 Paulskirk Drive in Ellicott City, where she was a communicant.

Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Russell P. Cain, an electrical engineer; four daughters, Laura A. Cain of Fort Collins, Colo., and Sara E. Cain, Julie M. Cain and Rebecca A. Cain, all of Columbia; a brother, Thomas Skelley of Manassas, Va.; and two sisters, Kathryn Smith of Alexandria, Va., and Margaret Skelley of Herndon, Va.
